Car Wall Holder

Hangs brick-built cars on the wall, nose up, roof out, from hooks under the front wheels. The car hangs below the hooks and rests back on its rear tyres, so it stays put on its own.

What it makes

A small plate that hangs a car on the wall, nose up, with its roof facing the room. A hook beside each front tyre curls in under it. The car hangs below the hooks and swings back until its rear tyres rest on the plate, so it stays put on its own.

Nothing presses into the car, so it lifts straight off. The hooks show beside the front wheels; the plate and both screws are hidden behind the car.

Measure your car

  • Tyre size: the outside diameter. Tyre names give it first, so a 24 x 12 tyre is 24 mm. The hooks fit that size and a little smaller.
  • Tyre size: the outside diameter. Tyre names give it first, so a 24 x 12 tyre is 24 mm.
  • Track: from the outside of one tyre to the outside of the other on the same axle.
  • Wheelbase: front axle to rear axle. Count the studs between them and times by 8.

Other ways to hold it

  • Studs: the car hangs on a pad of studs pressed into the plates under it, with chocks under the rear tyres. Nothing shows at all.
  • Shelf: the car sits side on, each axle in a V-groove, with a lip along the front.
  • Bracket per axle: for Technic cars, which are too heavy to hang by the wheels.

Printing it

  • Print the fit test first: one hook. A front tyre should drop in and not lift out when you pull the wheel away from the wall.
  • The hanging holders print flat, back on the bed. 15 to 35 g. No supports.
  • Shelves and brackets print lying on their backs, as the file comes.

Questions

Why hang it from the front wheels?

The car hangs below the hooks, so its weight swings it back against the wall and it can't tip off. Hooks under the rear wheels would hold the car balanced on top of them, so it would need something else to stop it falling forward.

What if the hooks hit the bodywork?

Lower the reach under the tyre, or raise the room beside it if the wheel arches stick out past the tyres. Cars with tyres that stand out from the body, like off-road cars, give the hooks the most room.

Will it hold a Technic car?

Technic cars have no plates underneath for studs, so use the bracket per axle style. Medium Technic cars work. A 1:8 supercar is too wide to print a holder for in one piece.

Does it work with LEGO cars?

Yes. The studs are the standard 4.8 mm at 8 mm spacing, so any LEGO or compatible car with plates underneath fits. Print the fit test to tune the grip. It is not made by or linked to LEGO.
